《洗象图》的主题取自佛经典故。「象」、「相」同音,「扫象」即「扫相」,意指破除对一切名相的执著。以“扫象(洗象)”为主题的作品在晚明颇为流行。晚明有记载指出,“扫象”一题是在玩弄暧昧的双关语游戏:“扫象”意即“洗象”,但同时也有“扫相”之意。此类画题曾有几个版本归属于钱选名下,在丁云鹏传世作品中,也有数幅此类作品。
